The Location
Halepa is a very atmospheric region, an architectural monument of the industrial age and has a rich cultural background that’s set deep into Cretan History. Just a stones’ throw from this apartment is the House of Eleftherios Venizelos who was a great political influencer of the early 1900s. At the end of the 19th Century this small neighbourhood was actually a town and there were many wealthy people who lived there. Remnants of this great and colourful past can be seen through the buildings and great houses in this area.
The area of coastline in the region of Halepa is called Tabakaria and it dates back to the Turkish occupation and name meaning Tanneries. This charming area was once full of 80 tanneries in the 1950s but now are all but abandoned. In recent years this area has seen many renovations of these beautiful buildings and are now transformed into homes, holidays lets or hotels, your apartment being one of those buildings. You’ll also find some excellent restaurants and tavernas hidden in this area.
Around the church of Halepa you will find the local bakery, grocer and a small taverna. There is also the local supermarket (SYNKA) 400m walking distance from the apartment or a Lidl 1km away if you have a car. There are also excellent fish tavernas in this area just a short walk/drive from your door.
Halepa is a quiet neighbourhood of Chania, there are good public transport links to this area as its very close to the city centre. A public bus stop is just 100m from this apartment on the main road and it will take you into the centre in less than 15 minutes. If you prefer walking it is an idyllic walk into the centre of the city and will take you around 20-30 minutes. Driving routes from the apartment are well connected and is only a short drive through the city to the national road where there is easy access to all locations around the island.
